Tom Scott

Tom Scott´s fall/winter 2007 collection draws from the notion of introspection-the tension between what is revealed of oneself, what remains hidden and the impression it leaves behind.

Accordingly, many of the garments feature unexpected details on the back-buttons, openings and zips-that become apparent only once the wearer turns away. At the same time, Scott, a knitwear designer, continues his exploration of clothing archetypes, with upside-down dresses, reverse cardigans and sweaters turned on their sides. Inspiration from the artist Ann Hamilton-an image, for example, of a head amid a bouquet of straw-adds an element of surrealism, while the fiber artist Sheila Hicks-who coined the phrase “thread-writing”-has prompted Scott to imbue a sense of narrative; several garments are knitted with his family tartan. Throughout, asymmetrical shapes, detached ribbing and other details lend a sense of incompletion. Scott´s designs often rely on accident, and are thus turned askew.

Tom Scott is a knitwear designer in New York. Tom Scott´s designs are characterized by architectural constructions that are simultaneously modern and understated, sophisticated and feminine. He often explores clothing archetypes, basing his designs on dismantled vintage garments that he reassembles with unconventional results, often relying on accidental discoveries. Many of his pieces blur the line between garment and accessory, fusing elements from both, and are designed so that wearers can manipulate them in ways that are — like the clothes themselves- unexpected.
